ALPHA UNITED NATIONS YOUTH AND STUDENTS CLUB

The Alpha United Nations Youth and Students Club

This club was launched three (3) years ago on the grounds of the Convent of Mercy Academy. The club is an initiative of the United Nations Association of Jamaica (UNAJ). It is designed to bring about awareness of issues affecting member countries of the United Nations.

Every year participating high schools are given a topic relating to an issue affecting UN countries to research and make presentations on at the Jamaica Conference Centre. Each school has to select a member country that it wants to represent. The students pretend to be ambassadors of the country selected, hence they have to do extensive research on the country and discuss the topic given in relation to their named country.

Alpha was placed fourth in 2013 when we represented Japan. We received assistance from the Japanese High Commission in the form of loans of attires and they provided additional information that was useful in completing the essay. We were invited to the Awards Ceremony at Kings House where we met the Governor General. Photographs were displayed on Kings House website and Jamaica Information Service (JIS) wrote an article about the event.

We were invited to the Assembly in Manhattan through the UNAJ and the girls are looking forward to it. They will be divided into three different committees. Each committee has a mixture of schools and is given a topic to present on. The countries they are representing are Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The young ladies continue to allow Alpha's flag to fly high and I'm happy to be here to support them.

Special thanks to their big sisters who are supporting them in a time when the support is well needed. We truly appreciate your kindness.

To God be the glory!

Regards,

Trudy Coney
